The FAA sequence runs Private, then Instrument, then Commercial, then CFI.
01 Private Pilot License Where most students begin, and the certificate everything else in aviation is built on top of.
Private Pilot covers the whole job: airwork, navigation, radio work, emergencies, and the judgement to decide when a flight is not happening.
Under Part 61 the sequence bends around a working life rather than a fixed class calendar.
It carries passengers, which for most people is the point.
02 Instrument Rating (IFR) The rating that turns a summer-afternoon pilot into one who can file, fly and land in New England weather.
Instrument training replaces the horizon with a scan, and replaces guesswork about weather with procedure.
It is the single biggest jump in capability after the Private certificate, and the one that most changes how far a trip can be planned.
Cross-country time toward the rating can be built in the school’s own aircraft.
03 Commercial Pilot License (CPL) The certificate that makes flying a job rather than a hobby, and the hour-building that gets there.
Commercial adds precision manoeuvres, tighter standards and the hours to back them up.
Aircraft rental and time building at Technique Only exist partly for this: the hours can be built where the training happens.
Most Commercial candidates hold an Instrument rating first.
04 Flight Instructor (CFI / CFII) Teaching from the right seat — the certificate that turns everything already learned into something explainable.
CFI training rebuilds every manoeuvre from the other seat and the other side of the explanation.
CFII adds instrument instruction on top of it.
It is also how most career pilots build the hours that come next.
Alongside every rating
Sport Pilot Certificate
The shortest legal route into the left seat, and a certificate plenty of people fly for a lifetime — treated here as a full training path, not a fallback.
Rental & Time Building
For certificated pilots: aircraft to rent once checked out, and hours to build without joining a queue.
Training built around you
A Discovery Flight is $175. Everything past that is quoted against the certificate being chased, and the hours are billed as hours flown — ground time is not on the meter.
Brief
A real pre-flight brief: what you’ll fly today, and why.
Fly
Your time in the air over the Rochester area.
Debrief
What happened, what went well, and what the next lesson sets up.
One instructor at a time. Training here is two people in a small airplane. Continuity with the same instructor is the norm, and a change is a conversation rather than a schedule accident.
